Coco

Eyes on
every move
of the never moving white van
parked before
the white apartments

until something else
rouses her interest

The big
tuxedo cat
comes out from behind
the building and
approaches our yard

Coco tenses
Wave of black fur rippling
across her shoulders
although she knows
she isn’t going out there

Something defensive
and deep angry in the way
she jumps down from the sill
to huff away to the kitchen
to eat
