and there’s no reason to assume it’s not…
we ought to either trash it, trash PSI, or get serious about reform.
A little revolt by some established venues might help.
Goddamnit, when will people grow a spine and realize not being a certified slam venue is not the end of poetry as we know it?

Re: essenzaslam–10 years running
Some people love it and some don’t. I would not be surprised if someone form Mesa went to Phoenix and start another slam and registered the venue. The Phoenix/Mesa area used to send two teams anyway, so it’s not a stretch. I wouldn’t hate on them or anything. It’s just a different set of priorities.

Re: essenzaslam–10 years running
Yeah, Bill stole my thunder…
I just took over as “slammaster” of the venue after ten years from bobdapoet, and my first act was to no longer register the venue. This is the e-mail I sent to the AZpoet list serve:
It is simple to me. The Essenzaslam used to send a team to nationals
as a byproduct of the slam. It is apparent to me that now: Essenzaslam
is a byproduct of “The Team”. That we have people who show up to make
the team, and when slam season is over; they are done with Essenzaslam,
because they are just burnt out. Essenzaslam is 50 weeks a year, and
doesn’t end in August. “The Team” has been such the all consuming
goal. That we have lost sight of why we even do this anymore. It’s
not about obtaining some sort of national stature. It is about self
expression and having forum for it. It is like we ended up
collectively getting obsessive compulsive disorder. Replace excessive
hand washing with NPS.
It is apparent to me that PSI is (to put it in less then flattering
terms) full of themselves, and other poets money. In eight years of
Mesa’s dealings with the organization. I can count the positive
interaction with the organization on one hand. They dangle NPS and
iWPS like the carrot before before the donkey, and we put up with them
because they run “the show.” They are a poorly run organization, that
I don’t want to be a part of it.
I believe the fun of Nationals is the interaction with poets form
other cites and seeing how other people do what we do too. With the
size of the regional slams they way they are now. I think what we as a
slam should get out of nationals; can be achieved at a regional now.: Mix
and mingle, make some contacts, and have a good time.
Lastly, I think we all need to take a good look at how seriously we
take this. There is so much friction around the slam. It is just way
too much bitching and tension for what should be a good time. Not that
everything in life is always positive all the time, but slam should not
be a negative

Re: Rambling a bit…
I’m not sure it really needs to be trashed, per se — more a revolt and reenergizing from within. Maybe.
Perhaps…a union of performance poets? Committed to certain principles, and organized to enact change within the PSI structure that will support those priniciples?
Hmmm…

Probably can’t travel to NYC myself…
since I’m fresh out of important things like, oh, money and vacation time. But I would be very interested in helping in whatever way I can if we get a group of people serious about developing a healthy alternative to the PSI machine.

i am gonna say this
yeah, NPS was shitty…but i thought it brought a lot of us closer together. believe me, i was personally affected by what went on (seeing how three members of our entourage were under 21) but had it not been for K-Zoo and room 511, it would have been a totally wasted experience.

Rambling a bit…
Well, this kind of makes me feel like our reading is between a rock and a hard place. We just (I mean like a couple weeks ago) submitted our paperwork to be a PSI certified reading/slam. My thinking behind all of that is that we have so many talented poets that come to our reading who need and quite frankly deserve some national exposure.
Being able to use a name like National Poetry Slam that is overseen by an Incorporated establishment would definitely help in fund-raising efforts to get people out to the competitions. These poets need to see what else is out there and be inspired as well as inspiring others.
If there is another way to do this now, please let me know.
This past week has made me sick to my stomach because I have been pushing PSI membership for a while and also talking it up like it would be a real benefit to our poets. I don’t want to eat crow but at the same time I don’t have an alternative to suggest in place of supporting NPS/PSI. This reading needs to grow — it’s begging for it.
I would say reform is definitely in order, but I don’t know how long or how hard people have tried to fix this. If the organization was trashed what other avenues could we use to make our little scene become a force to be reckoned with in poetry and slam?

we are now a PSI free zone. we’re going it alone. from now on we slam because we like it and not because it will let us qualify for a slam off.

probably around the same time they grow a spine and
stop needing a big 10 held up in front of their face
every time they do something “good”.
or maybe,
a day after all these wanna be politicians give up
wanna be politics and run for a real office or something…
either that or the government agents/agency responsible for
“propping up” slam to distract a generation of artists will
fall apart, or go concentrate on assasinating michael moore
or something…
