Song From The Couch
Songs From The Couch…
is the title of my first solo album — a mix of poems and songs on solo guitar.
Current goal is to release it as a freebie for download on Patreon first, before I release it to the rest of the world. I’m preparing the track listings, cover, etc., as we speak.
I hope to reach the goal of $1000/month in subscriptions to the Patreon soon. Currently at just over $800.

Patreon recruitment
Let’s talk a little bit about Patreon — mine, in particular.
Patreon is a site that allows supporters to offer monetary help to artists, musicians, poets, etc. It give people a way to provide material support to folks out here working in the precarious world of creative pursuits.
Some people do very well and make the majority of their income from Patreon, offering incentives and exclusive rewards to folks at various subscription levels.
I do not, but I do try. And I think I do offer some things to my Patrons some of you might appreciate. Exclusive poems, video blogs, eBooks, etc.
If you go to the site you’ll find a guide to what’s available at what tiers of support. Right now, I’m also offering a 7-day free trial for folks signing up at the $10/month level. And if I reach $1000 of support I’m releasing a new solo album as an early release to Patrons.
In addition, sign up by Monday the 12th at the $10/month level and you’ll be eligible to attend a free online workshop I’m running in August.

Announcing Workshops…
Next month is National Poetry Month, an occasion I usually celebrate by doing the same damn things I always do.
This time, it’s gonna be different.
I will be offering TWO poetry workshops for patrons of my Patreon site who are the at the $10/month level or above…TWO!!
One will be a repeat of “The Poetry Of Place,” and the other (already tentatively scheduled for April 30) will be a sorta-kinda generative session I’m calling “Voice, Craft, and the Line.” Still under construction, but I think you’ll like it.
April is going to be a test case for an ongoing series of these.
I’d like to start offering a workshop a month (that’s the plan anyway) as a perk for higher tiers with a public option. I’m not sure exactly what this will look like yet and I’d welcome your input.
The current plan is to look at weekend afternoons for these as I think that will afford us the most accessible time for anyone. But…Saturday, Sunday? Early PM, mid, early evening? Certainly I can do a mix but I’d like to hear from y’all.
My current thinking is to develop three or four and then rotate them, bringing in new ones now and then, phasing out old ones, etc. Evolving curriculum. That sort of thing.
There will be an option for non-patrons to attend. Keep reading…I’m thinking a $30 charge for non patrons for one workshop. Payable through Venmo, Paypal; send me a message for the details. I’ll start taking them now if you like for the April 30 session and will let everyone know when the other date is set.

I’m still working on various other rewards for Patrons — waiting on the site itself to announce some new things. But…
I’m currently sitting at 72 patrons across all levels, bringing in around $800 a month.
As I’ve said, I’d like to grow my Patreon site a bit more and reach more folks in the process. You can help — If I can get another three patrons at the $5/month tier or above by the end of tomorrow, I’ll change my rewards section permanently to make sure that everyone AT ALL TIERS gets EVERY EBOOK I PUBLISH there.
That’s at least one per quarter and the annual anthology. Upgrading to a higher tier counts.
Although it’s not necessary, I will mention that paying a year in advance gets you a discount.

Last Call for the Rip-Up Reading
On February 23 at 7:30 PM EST I’ll be doing a live via Zoom reading (tomorrow night) of a special set of poems. No one has seen them; they will be printed, read once, and destroyed after the reading. Literally, a one time only event.
I’d planned this to be a Patrons-only event but am opening it to the general public on a pay per view basis.
It will be $10 USD for the performance, payable through either PayPal or Venmo. Message me here and we can work through the details. I’d love to have some of you attend.

The Poetry Of Place

New eBook on the way for my Patrons
Just ended work for the day on the first quarter eBook for my patrons at the $15/up level, a volume of some of the longer poems and poem sequences I’ve done over the years. Most of these do not appear here on the Dark Matter blog, btw.
I’ve got short commentaries for each sequence left to finish and then I’ll format it for ePub and PDF, after which it will be distributed to the lucky (?) patrons.
Still trying to decide about one piece which I think is kind of an interesting but decided failure — thought it might be useful from an educational standpoint on process. Will I revise it or put it out there, warts and all? We shall see…
You too can join in the fun and be a part of the madness…if you become a patron. Rewards will be shifting soon but even at the $1/month level, something will always be there. Promise.

A few days ago, I posted a poem called “What Are The Rules,” and had a moment of clarity about the fact that after all these years of doing this, I actually do have an understanding about poetry, my relationship to it, and how it works for me and perhaps for others as well.
Which led me to another thought: that maybe, just maybe, my long standing resistance to putting together a full length manuscript needs to come to an end.
I’m 61, and after literally 50+ years of doing this, my stubbornness about adhering to the whole DIY thing is bending a bit. Self-published chaps, eBooks for patrons, the public blog, all those things are going to remain in place, but I think I want something more — a collection out there that pulls together the stuff that matters most to me and that I think will have appeal to the more “mainstream readers” of poetry, who dig the whole “book culture” thing. Also, y’know, mortality, legacy, etc…
So. Into the fray with this. And I’d like your help.
On my Patreon site, I’m running a special offer (through November 22) in which anyone who joins, upgrades to, or is currently part of the site at the $10 and up tiers, will see posts, videos, drafts, etc. — not sure what exactly — of the process of putting together this beast.
I’ve got over 6,000 poems to consider; you can help me think about selection processes, ordering of the works, etc. I need the assistance and the encouragement, so I hope you’ll jump into the conversation about the project.
