What John Said Yesterday

the men sit around with the men
and the women sit around with the women

the men talk to other men
about tight asses or firm tits

the women talk to other women
about splendid wrecks or fine messes

when they talk together every one of them
will laugh at the other one

no straight man speaks of the queer folk
without shuddering a little at them

no straight woman speaks of the queer folk
without shuddering a little for them

at least this is how I picture it
from a lonely place

I don’t speak to anyone
if I can help it

I eat soup and lentil chips alone
unbothered by men and women

alone on the library stairs
so much more inside that tomb

but I am damned to never enter
as long as men are men and women are women

I am just too afraid of
uniqueness coming over me

and proving
me wrong
