Fought with God all morning
regarding the assumption of power.
How much does God presume to hold?
I asked and got no answer worth considering.
My left hand went numb
and my right wasn’t far behind; my eyes
insisted on closing, had to stop
what I was doing entirely.
Thinking of the answer I feared, I sat back
and did a thing some might call praying;
others might call it demanding dismissal.
I didn’t bother to name it.
God, that mute swan, didn’t bother
to weigh in one way or another. Leaves me
to hang on to whatever I can in my
debilitated state, let go of the rest.
God did, in other words, what God
always does. My bent head, my crippled
hands, my shuffling feet make it obvious:
I’m pissed off at heaven itself. So much for God
and what is done in the name of God.
I’ve got pain; chills, no ecstasy in that pain.
I’ve got a vision of my heart stopping right now.
God laughed. Turned a broad back. Left me.
