A Man

Walking a city sidewalk,
early October;
drags left leg slightly;

head down, his hands folded behind his back;
gray pants just a smidge too large for him;
a brown T-shirt with unknown writing on it;

walking on a warm day, almost a hot day,
it could be one last warm day for a while;
walking past a gas station, ignoring cars;

walking slowly as if in meditation
though he more likely is
in pain or distress or perhaps

is just tired, tired of all of this —
and I have been that man and could be
him again someday.

Melting Pot

there are ads on TV
that urge the buying of gold
silver platinum palladium
and all the frightened buyers
are White with one exception
and he’s Black in front of
a golf course he must own

there are ads on TV
that talk of depression
psychosis bipolar one and two
and all the sick users
are White with two exceptions
and they’re both Black
one styles makeup for a wedding
one directs kids in a football game

I used to talk about ads with
a VP of advertising (he was
White) and he used to talk about
how they’d use people of no
obvious ancestry
he called them Tweeners

there are ads on TV
for drugs and foods
and all sorts of sundry products
the colors pair up between
the subject and the background
yellow and blue
red and green

there are ads on TV
for HELOC and man
I don’t know what that is
except it’s got something to do
with having money to fix
your house up and people
in the ads are White
mostly

there are ads on TV
for poor people I guess
feed the children give them hope
for sick people I guess
get them to a clinic
take these AIDS drugs
for old people I guess
get them to a place like home
give them money for a proper burial

and all the people look the same
AI makes them look the same
TV makes them look the same
all the people look the same
the White people the Black people
the Tweeners the Children the Elderly
the Already Dead
the Still Alive

you wouldn’t know the difference
if it bit you in the ass

On Killings

“He killed four people.” He killed
more than that if you count down
all the lives he stunted by doing that
and maybe it comes out to five or more
or maybe they didn’t care enough
to lose a smidgen of sleep over it.

“He killed seven or eight or nine people,”
and maybe he did or he didn’t but
it seems that as the number goes up
the tension of what he did comes down
and people are shocked but they stop caring
except for the few who knew him or the people
he killed or the professional bloody hearts
of people in the know about such things.

“He killed a lot of people, innumerable people,”
and maybe he did do that but it wasn’t like
he did it himself; maybe he did do that
but it wasn’t like he cared for them at all,
leaving that to someone else and maybe they cared
in their own clinical way but when it was done
they went home to bed and didn’t lose
a smidgen of sleep over one of them.

“He hasn’t hurt a fly himself, he’s a kindly
old man, can’t believe any of this, put
my hands over my ears, lalalalalalala…”
and maybe they are right and maybe they’re not
but the people are still dead, they’re rotting
in the street, in their homes, in big old graves
dug far from here, or in the big old ocean;
some people are dead, some are not; either way
this earth turns impartially around while people
are either alive and at peace or they aren’t
and they lose smidgens of sleep in unending chains.

In fact, only the unhappy few
remember all those now buried dead
and they certainly would go to their graves
and leave flowers if they had enough for all.
