Maybe Anthony Braxton

It’s going to be a long hard day.

In a moment of weak preparedness
I try to snatch a song from the flutter
in my head. (A song is always
there, usually plopping around
in the mess, the mix.)

I try to make sure
it’s something new, not old.
But right now
it’s an old Cheap Trick song.
I can’t even remember how I know it.
Maybe it’s not Cheap Trick at all?
I’ve grown up with rock music;
could it be some other band’s tune?

Lord, I really hate rock music
when I’m like this.
Want something more angular? Maybe
Rahsaan Roland Kirk, him with the
multiple horns and his gifted blindness
to music? I shouldn’t talk like this.
I should wash my ears out
with something strong.
Maybe Albert Ayler?

All this takes a second.
Cheap Trick ain’t
gonna cut it, not at all.

It’s going to be a long hard day.
