Two Birds

Two birds, Avoidance and Dismissal,
have come to roost in the rafters of the palace.

The beat of their wings deafens the pragmatists
who snap their heads back and forth between them.

They choose which bird offers more to them right now,
no longer hearing anything beyond these walls.

The birds sit, stir, and raise and lower their feathers
in time, waiting to feed.
