Not sure if you saw my article on GP a while back on the current state of slam as witnessed at IWPS. I address that whole ” is it an art form, a dessert topping, or what?” issue to some extent.

This is going to be the article I’ll be referring back to when current slammers say “Everything is OK in Slam Poetry, it’ll go on forever.” or “I don’t know about the rest of the country but in my venue we are producing edgy work.”
Not because I doubt that Slam will continue or that there are not Slam Poets producing exciting work but because Slam is an art form (I would even go so far as to say a poetic form but that’s a discussion for another day) and any art form has to engage in the process of self-analysis.
It’s good to hear Smith talking openly about the conversations that are going on among serious critics (and fans) of Slam.
