I’m digging more and more on the new Springsteen album.
You must know that I was a hardcore Bruce fan for years, all the way back to the first couple of albums; the first tour I saw was the infamous “Darkness” tour, and I caught shows on tours all the way through Human Touch; plus the Amnesty Tour shows in Philly.
Then the tix got too pricey.
I’ve also been a bit weirded out that the NJ scruffbag we used to follow became the elder statesman, all that heavy philosophy, etc.
(I liked “The Rising” because of what it was — I know a lot of people didn’t, but I will confess that personally, it did help. A bit. I think people forgot who it was written for.)
But “Devils and Dust?” Put it like this: I could see Bruce and Steve Earle touring together really easily with this material. Lots of Dobro, fiddle, and classic folkie arrangements. Good lyrics, some of the best he’s ever done. (Some of the dirtiest, too…example: RENO.)
Anyway, the punk comes out and says it: I’m a Bruce fan again. Dammit.

I love Dan Bern! Or Bernstein, as he had decided to change his performing name to when I last saw him in concert. This was a few years ago, so I don’t know if the change stuck.

I’m a Bruce fan simply because “I’m on fire” is one of the top ten best songs ever written, IMHO. But I’m also very intrigued by the new Bruce album because apparently Starbucks won’t carry it because of it’s references to anal sex. What are the references? I’m so curious.

I can’t help it~I grew up in Jersey & so, you can’t mess with ~Bruce & Patti around me.You can hear the Jersey in them.They’re both these sort of elder, scruffy-around-the-edges statespeople, both of them still stick up for the blue collars & sing their old songs with the new & find themselves doing fundraisers.
Nebraska will always be one of my favorite albums-DIY before DIY hitched up with punk (I think).Everything Bruce does now is icing, is gravy, is proof that he’s still vital and ticking, is probably going to live on the long side like Dylan.
I would love to see him with Steve Earle~I can also imagine it happening.Steve’s punk too, in that Ian MacKaye “punk is more than attitude, more like a dystopian, socially conscious view more than it is about hair or clothes, or sometimes, even the music you play,” kinda way.

You know, I’ve never been much of a Bruce fan, but the Rising is great, and I’ve loved what I’ve heard from the new one.
And hey-Don’t scruffbags either end up dead or as elder statesmen? They have to have earned all the lines around their eyes.
