Broken

What his body said
when they picked him up
after he fell
was that he was broken,
not referring to a leg or an arm,
but to a whole man.

I don’t know how we never realized that before.
You could see the cracks
from way off. It’s just that
none of us thought they went all the way through,
and they looked old and almost
watertight anyway.
