1. I edited the previous poem a bit. Thanks for suggestions…
2. Robbie Q. and Joel Chmara made me laugh harder than I’ve laughed in ages.
3. Anti-Semitism sounds just as ugly in a foreign language. (I’d explain, but I’m too pissed to be coherent about it. Let another Worcesterite dig in on this.)
4. I was offpage for a new poem tonight for the first time in ages. Can’t imagine why…
5. I want a new way to categorize what I do, creating a place for some of us who sit in my place to hang our hats.
We’re:
— poets first, performers second
— post slam, for the most part –we came of age in it but don’t find it too interesting anymore
— want less speed, fewer words, and more space for audience thought and interpretation
— are more comfortable with ambiguity than the average slammer
— less interested in face time now and more interested in legacy later. Universality.
“Post-slam” is too obvious. “New Category”? NOT “spoken word artists” — I loathe that term.

there was a lot more — terms from the whole murky world of masonic / jewish cabal / knights templar comspiracies.
i’ve seen him do this before; plus, there’s a serious and unsavory piece of history in this guy’s past — dcumented — that makes my blood boil.
i want an excuse.

I certainly didn’t recognize it right off the bat… but as I’ve gone around to other readings, venues, slams, etc.. it didn’t take long before I began picking up on the difference between what is often slam poetry and what is not. and, i’m glad to have noticed it. I agree.. I believe that it opens new doors. I guess we’ll have to see where it goes from here. 😉

on a less serious note. . .
I went to the Nuyorican on friday and saw a (too short) feature by Robbie Q. and Joel Chmara. They really were a riot. It was refreshing to see two talented people have so much fun with their work and not take themselves so seriously.

I’m so glad you said this. It’s an awesome poem — not in a surfer way, dude, but in that it inspired awe in me.
I love it when a talented writer who may have previously been deep into slam recognizes the difference. I’m not saying that you didn’t before but you never said so.
I think you have opened the door for “the next level” of you writing in a manner of speaking and I hope you are just as if not more excited about that than I am.

3. Anti-Semitism sounds just as ugly in a foreign language. (I’d explain, but I’m too pissed to be coherent about it. Let another Worcesterite dig in on this.)
He’s done this before. Last night I started taking notes on key words because I’m really curious is it’s actually a speech. I don’t know German (I think that’s what it was?), but you could easily pick up on “muslims”, “Jerusalum”, “Politician”, and a few other terms. He’s done this at least twice before, however, I don’t recall recognizing a possibility of anti-semetism in his previos recitations until last night. To be honest, I find this manipulative. He got the crowd going, but what’s frightening is how many audience members, including myself, actually know what the hell he’s saying?
I, too, would be interested in anyone else’s opinion regarding this matter.
Thanks.

Thanks.

one has to admit.. that at some point or another.. many of those who step into the slam scene, will at some point in time, let the power of performance become higher on their list of priorities than the power of good poetry.. quality writing. I can guarantee it happens to the best of us. I think the most important thing that those of us in the “performance poetry” (for lack of a better term) society need to do is focus on writing good poetry with performance simply in mind.
I, for one, have a handfull of poems meant for performance only. But in reading them, I’ve grown to severely dislike them.. and in some respects loathe them, for the poetry was sacrificed for the sake of the slam.
there, i said it.
but i’m done with that now. i’m rather tired of it. the performance can work itself out later. my current goal is to write good poetry. that’s it. if i’m lucky… i’ll find a way to make it sound good when read or “performed”. My most recent piece was intended to do just that. It’s a simplistic, qualtiy writing with a potentialy hard-to-grasp meaning/theme, that I happened to try out at our last slam with a pre-planned performance. It got a great crowd response.. with horrible scores. I couldn’t have been more thrilled at the result. between the judges and the crowd’s completely opposite reaction.. It gave me a lot to think about.
but now i feel like i’m rambling. I’m gunna shut up now.

the conflict between poetry and performance (in contrast to the complementary nature of the two) has always underscored in my mind the need for a strong poetry community–i need to be able to go up to the kid who got dropped from the first round last night and say, “you know what? i really liked your line about ‘crocodile toes.’ fuck the judges. keep sharing.” too, i need to be able to ask other poets for constructive criticism if i’m not scoring as well as i think i should. when i define the slam family in my head, i want the emphasis to always be on communion between me, my art, and my friends-as-audience.

Liam and I have discussed this on a number of occasions. I’m thinking of having ‘speaking fast doesn’t make you a good poet’ tatooed on my behind.
Tony, you don’t like the term “Performance Poet”? That’s the one I usually use when I happen to mention to mundanes that ‘My husband has a gig’ and they brighten and say, ‘Oh! He’s a musician?’ and I tell them, ‘No, he’s a performance poet.’ Then they say, ‘oh…’ and change the subject.

Well, good for you. I try to aspire to the same standards. I think it’s slightly jive for your SM to be pushing performance… after all, you can make good performance out of a good poem, but not a good poem out of a good performance. You’re right; the poetry must come first.
And the audience won’t help you with your writing. The question “Why can’t poets be good enough?” is sometimes like the question, “Why don’t they make good movies anymore?” Well, they do, but they make so many crap movies because that’s what people want. Same with slam; your “National Treasure” poem is going to score higher than your “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” poem. It’s one of the best paradoces in slam: you both have to write poetry for an audience, but also not appeal to the lowest common denominator (representatives of which are usually holding at least 3 of 5 scorecards). So, I guess, the trick is to actually improve your audience with your poetry.
That’s crazy, ain’t it?

I feel like she’s pushing us to focus too much on the performance and not on the poetry.
And I’m certainly no dissing the performance aspect of it — I just want to make sure I keep my priorities straight. I want to grow up (in terms of poetry, I’m quite old enough to be grown up) to be a poet like some I’ve met through this infernal machine — poets whose work translates in performance AND on the page.

I guess, in theory, the point is to write such great poetry that no amount of amazing performance skills can detract from it.
But usually, it is the performance that sells the poetry, but in my opinion, the performance and the body become the poem incarnate, not just a vessel.

Some are… more then you might think but less then gives me hope.
It’s the community aspect of slam, the type of entertainment that’s come to be expected from it. Even in our tiny little area of Delaware the self-referential mainstream wannabeness has stooped us to constantly vying for crowd approval in a limited set of accepted ways.

Re: I really should be in bed by now, but…………..
Amen to this. It’s sad to me that a great performance will often overshadow a great poem.
There have been may instances in my experiences of going to see a good “poet” and instead seeing a good “performer”. And being struck both by their ability to connect with the crowd and the relative weekness of their rather shallow work.

I’m new to slamming, per se, although I’ve always been someone who performed her poetry. So, this aspect of it, as my host explains it, has always bothered me. She goes on about how the performance is what sells the poems, and that makes me want to clack my teeth over anything that might come out of my mouth. The point IS THE POETRY.
Poets. Why can’t poets be good enough?

Something conveying that the poems written are meant to be read aloud?
Oralists? Audilists? Neither are good, I know.

I really should be in bed by now, but…………..
I like what you’ve said here about being “poets first, performers second.” I think the performing aspect has always thrown me off a bit, since the energy that is expended getting a piece memorized or “sounding right” seems to take away from the actual content of the poem (at least this is what happenes to me personally, since I am not an actor and have never been able to master this aspect of “slam”) And with regards to the majority of the group pieces at the 2004 Nats, i believe someone (pardon my brain for not remembering who) described them as “community theater skits.” Ugghh.
