The Congregational bell downtown
strikes ten. I’m surprised though
I know it does this every hour of the day;
there are whole weeks
when I don’t hear it because
I’ve lived here so long.
Rushing to the store
late before it closes
is something I do
that most folks around here
never need to do because they’re
done and locked and asleep by nine
at the latest. Walking the aisles
in a pea coat and earrings, ponytail
hanging to my shoulder blades,
I barely draw a look anymore
from anyone — renowned small town
eccentric, pausing
in the cat food aisle,
loading up to head home before
the next bell rings,
still hoping something will happen.

This took me straight back to the couple of years that I lived in a town of 900. Thank you.

This is a beautiful piece, Tony.
It’s interesting and cool and odd and wonderful to think of you living and moving within the realm and circle of sound defined by the Congregational church’s bell, and yet how the bell tolls in your own hearing far too irregularly to be a constant reminder.
I live within the circle of sound defined by the fake electronic carillon of the local Catholic church — which apparently plays hymns written only by Protestants. 🙂

Maybe just becasue it is a supermarket setting, this strikes me as an anti-ginsberg poem… what happens after the howl…
I like it. I especially like the bell ringing (or anticipation of) juxtaposed with the hoping something will happen… maybe the bell WON’T ring… maybe.

I enjoy having a solid image of Tony moving through the world.
The turn on the last line is fantastic.
