The world’s big insurance companies have indicated that they won’t be adversely affected by the tsunami, because so little of the property involved was insured and the population was generally too poor to have insurance.
Whew.

Condemn them?
Hmmm.
Let’s try condemning the system that ensures that we’ll be covered to the hilt for every piece of bad luck that comes our way, but simple survival funds won’t be available for millions of people.
That’s all.
It’s not the insurance companies I object to…it’s the way the economic system of this planet operates. The way certain lives are worth less than others. The way that the Indonesian oilfields, located just off Aceh, did nothing to improve the economic conditions of those people.
I’ll just bet some of those insurance companies hold some stock in Royal Dutch Shell. Too bad the system that benefits them couldn’t help the indigenous people who subsist among their assets.
Or, perhaps I should say, subsisted.

I take exception –
There’s no silver bullet to cover every loss, and an insurance company depends on holding enough of its premiums to cover as many losses as possible – a catastrophe can seriously impair a company’s ability to cover all the rest of its customers’ losses – or even put it out of business, and then they can’t cover anything.
If the insurance industry takes a big hit, it comes right out of our pockets, and unless you’re in a position to pay up or do without, I think it’s unfair to condemn them so easily.
Granted, the article could have been written in a more sensitive way, but that’s not the fault of insurance companies.

my biggest concern…
was how the insurance companies were going to fare in this whole tragedy. its nice to see that they won’t be affected too adversely.

I was real worried about their ability to maintain in light of this tragedy.
Nevermind the guy who held his 3 year old son right up until the 15 foot wall of water threw him into a structure and he lost his hold on his son. That guy is gonna be just fine, but those insurance companies…
*retches*
