Eileen makes a comeback

The Worcester folks who hear all my stuff may recall a poem (from Mano Poderosa)called “Eileen is Burning,” about a long suffering, artistically stifled suburban woman who at last figures out a way toward a bit of freedom.

Think of this as a prequel, or perhaps I’m turning her into a multipart poem.

The realization
that she could not live
without generous portions of
well-placed silence
came to her on vacation
at Lake Mead when,
while she stared at the
shoulders of a rock hill
and wondered at how they
rose from the sunset water
like a debutante’s shoulders from
a lilac dress, only more
naturally and with no
agenda,

her husband started in again
on the day’s fishing.

She closed her eyes
and nodded, thinking
of nothing.
