You can’t be too strong…You decide what’s wrong.

A man has killed himself at Ground Zero, apparently in protest of Bush’s re-election.

An angry mob in North Carolina has vandalized and set fires at GOP headquarters.

These are probably sad coincidences, isolated incidents, random acts of despair.

Of course they are.

I wasn’t suggesting violence is the answer. Not at all.

My thought was simply this: that the rage and despair that led to these things happening isn’t isolated, or an aberration.

    1. It’s a naked mole-rat! You can find out more about them here (halfway down the page): http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/AfricanSavanna/ . There’s also a naked mole-rat livecam. The closest thing to porn I look at on the internet 😉

    2. Tony is smart, which is why I respect him so much. We don’t always see eye to eye, but that’s perfectly reasonable when thinking people discuss stuff. As to the Panthers, they were armed and mobilized, even before the FBI cut the thinking head off the gun-toting body. They weren’y necessarily *violent*, but they still got smacked to pieces. My only tie to this stuff, really, is a meeting w/ Assata Shakur in 1998.

As to the Nerlson Mandela angle, when we look at the history of South Africa, we see a majority brutally repressed by a small minority. In that scenario, the only recourse is violence, since the oppressed were *completely* excluded from the ability to set policy. We need to accept two things: we are not currently the majority, so that is what we have to change. We *do* have inroads to governance, and we need to exploit those fully before turning to violence. We are all frustrated, and that spills out in bloody ways sometimes. I think it would be massively counter-productive to the aim of winning the majority if we gave in to those baser impulses before using peaceful tactics.

    Two things:

    1. Momstar, what is that in your icon? I’ve never seen anything like it before so I wanted to know what kind of animal that is.

    2. Tony makes a lot of great points (he’s so smart!!), especially about the New Panthers versus the Black Panthers. I’ve been unfortunate enough to witness the New Panthers rallying in front of a Black Owned Business spouting their whatever you wish to call it. I actually had a friend who got swung at by a guy who worked at said establishment for telling him that their behavior was negetavely impacting the success of their business. Needless to say, neither the dude that did the swinging or the New Panthers have been back to that place in a while.

But you’re right…violence is definitely not the answer.

The Panthers eventually evolved into a political organization (don’t confuse the New Panthers — a racist group — with the old group) and various members hold political office, partly because they were seen in their constiuency as having a full-spectrum appraoch to social change, beyond violence into outreach, etc. But their mantra of encouraging self defense helped with that. They have been overly demonized by the media.

The American Indian Movement has had much the same history, and continues to hold some sway in Native movement circles. (Full disclosure — member since 1982.)

Violence for violence’s sake doesn’t work, I agree; it doesn’t mean that the group espousing it is completely invalid. Ask Nelson Mandela.

Violence is useless. What happened to the Black Panthers? The Weathermen? You will be quashed ruthlessly, you will be destroyed. It’s like picking a fight with an army of genetically engineered gorillas. Then you will be held up as 1) a warning to others, and 2) an example of the moral bankrupcy of the left (whether it is true or not, the gorillas own the media, and the guerillas are cannon fodder).

This war for hearts and open minds can only be successfully fought with peace. I’m not giving up, and I’m not buying a gun. I’m moving to Pennsylvania in a year (maybe a little more), so I can dig into the heartland and fight.
