in the wake of the Red Sox celebration was the babysitter for one of my co-workers’ twins.
Fortunately for all concerned, the mayor has assured us she was killed by a “non-lethal weapon.”
Also important: the riot cops are getting counseling.
Good to know.

terrible accident
At least this incident is getting addressed on all levels, without blame and burial under the carpet. It was an accident waiting to happen, and it did.

Given all the past damage to people and property from post-game riots, I think the police had to react seriously. Without any evidence of malicious intent on the part of the officer (bad aim? bad luck?), the only people I hold responsible are the rioters. My sympathy always goes out to political demonstrators who are assaulted by police, but this was a fucking sporting event, entertainment. I’m sure your co-worker’s babysitter was just attending the game and got carried off into the crowd afterward. I can’t blamer her or the police in this case.

1. Minivans are evil.
2. Being drunk disturbs your aim.

never understood why papers do that sort of thing. do people really buy more papers if there is a dying person on the cover? does it serve to better inform the public of the news? i would be hard pressed to think of a time when something like that was appropriate. if anything, i would think people would be less likely to buy a paper with a picture like that on the cover.

Re: News This Morning
Are they offering anything to the parents of the girl? Like answers? Or accountability.
the head of the boston police was on the news last night offering an apology & assuming full responsibility for her death. they are investigating exactly what happened & why she was killed.
to be the decenter here, i’m glad that the police involved are getting counseling.
the “bean bags” that they were using are generally safe. they were developed to replace rubber bullets, which kill quite often. i have never heard of someone being killed by one of the “bean bags”, even at close range. they tend to do less damage than nightsticks… the traditional form of riot control. these officers did not set out to kill anyone, they were trying to disperse what was quickly becoming a riot.
i feel great sympathy for the family & friends of the girl, but i also feel sympathy for the officer who will now live with the knowledge that he killed someone when he was trying not to.
as much as we would like to break the world down into good & bad it is never that simple. most of the time we are standing in the gray area & the answers are never as simple as they seem.

And I’m sure the police were nervous, what with thousands of “We Did IT!” morons in the street, ready to overturn cars and break shit, to celebrate a remarkable sports feat they had nothing to do with other than watch.

It was actually more like a paintball filled with pepperspray instead of red acrylic.
On the plus side, the Boston Police are taking responsibility for the incident. They did it immediately, without casting any blame on the victim. Of course, guilt is hardly enough when an innocent person is murdered in cold blood by the very people we count on for our protection.

Re: News This Morning
It was actually more like a paintball filled with pepperspray instead of red acrylic.
On the plus side, the Boston Police are taking responsibility for the incident. They did it immediately, without casting any blame on the victim. Of course, guilt is hardly enough when an innocent person is murdered in cold blood by the very people we count on for our protection.

On the other hand
had she been a Yankee’s fan, would we celebrate? According to the hyperbole the “world would be made a better place”.
This all sucks.
My condolences to your co-worker,
my prayers for the girl’s family.

News This Morning
staes she was hit in the head, at close range, by a “bean bag” projectile. Much like rubber bullets, close range pretty much negates the “non-lethal” intention of the weapon.
I’m glad the police are getting counseling. Are they offering anything to the parents of the girl? Like answers? Or accountability.
