Movies I Hated that Every One Else Liked

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This reminded me of stoned conversations in college that seemed deep at the time but were, in fact, pretty stupid.

2. Waking Life

See above, and muliply it by two.

3. American Beauty

How a rich pothead pedophile works out to Everyman, I’ll never know. Despicable characters, vile plot, lame social commentary.

4. The Star Wars movies

I found the first one (Lucas’ inane numbering sequence aside, the first released) mildly entertaining, the rest predictable. Can’t even recall the plots of most of them.

5. Farenheit 9/11

I’ve weighed in on this before — nothing new and some borderline racist bits made me furious.

Go for it.

It really pisses me off, how much people DON’T watch Godzilla films.

    FAHRENHEIT 9/11
Guess I might be alone on this one….but I thought Fahrenheit 9/11 was really good. My one beef with it was that it contained elements utilizing Michael Moore’s attempts at “humor”. He should just stick to anger/sarcasm. The race baiting thing, maybe I missed it?

    AMERICAN BEAUTY
I thought it was good, but in retrospect, I wish movies didn’t try to “insist” to me that such and such an actress is “tempting” and “irresistable” – like Suvari and Birch. Way prettier actresses out there. Kevin Spacey was funny, though.

    STAR WARS
Booooooooooooooooooooooooring! (except for the first one).

I like him particularly for “The Big Lebowski” as the Stranger/Narrator…
The Coen Bros. said they liked working with Elliot because of his moustache-they could rearrange his dialog anyway they wanted because you can’t see his lips.

That movie is one of the best Film Noir detective stories ever made, mostly because of the twists to the genre.

    I agree 50%.

Waking Life is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. It was like freshman college students sitting up all night discussing crap. DORKY freshman college students.

I also didn’t like Fahrenhite 9-11, which was about 5% as good as Columbine. It wasn’t balanced, it was snarky, and it overshot its target — it won’t change the minds of many people, is my guess, though it may get people to vote, which is good.

I also hate the Star Wars movies.

But I love, love, love American Beauty. And I sort of like Eternal Sunshine.

Yeah, The Piano bothered me, too. I thought it was pretty misogynistic.

My American Beauty thing is pretty irrational, or perhaps instinctive — I found the movie offensive in a very profound way.

I felt the same way, exactly, about War of The Roses.

    Naked Harvey!

Harvey is my man…where is my naked Harvey? I’ve been in love with him forever…and, sure, he’s not the greatest actor, but well, there is no logic to it! But The Piano is a strange film. I loved it initially, and on subsequent viewings, didn’t feel so great about it.

Of your list, I only saw one of the Star Wars movies – I think it was the first one.

Didn’t do anything for me. I am not into sci-fi unless it has something else going on… mostly artsy visuals e.g. The Fifth Element or Blade Runner.

The English Patient was really great fun when watched after Face/Off. We kept hollering BOOM at the most inappropriate times. I watched it later and wondered what the fuss was about.

Leo’s Romeo and Juliet was a good vehicle for teaching it to sophomores (which means, I suppose, the movie is sophomoric?) Let’s face it, Shakespeare wasn’t written for brainiacs.

The Piano, which my mother still loves, confounded me. It didn’t help to be ‘treated’ to a naked Harvey Kaitel.

Portrait of a Lady I really really really wanted to like. All my friends raved about it. I wanted to slap nicole kidman…

I agree that American Beauty didn’t show reality — it was an outsized portrait of the fantasy of suburbia. I thought the acting was phenomenal and I loved the pictures. Very unsettling, for me. Moms agrees with me on this one.

I used to show the Star wars movies when teaching the Odyssey to 9th graders. Great, easy representation of the heroic journey in a digestible format.

    4. The Star Wars movies

Whenever I hear star wars mentioned these days, I remember my mom’s story about seeing with my dad when it came out.
They left the theater and one of them turned to the other and said:
“Not bad for a western, huh?”

And at least in a western we would’ve gotten to see Sam Elliot.

    SInce we’re on the subject,

Here’s my list that keeps me out of the cool club

I absolutely hated Baz Luhrman’s Romeo and Juliet:
with all those tight close-ups, no one was actually acting. And then there was Clare Danes, who just wasn’t acting.

Pulp Fiction: way too self-conciously hip, and just icky. I think Tarantino is a wanker.

Clerks, Chasing Amy, Mallrats: I so wanted to like Clerks when it first came out, because I was a clerk at the time, but I am not an asshole, so I couldn’t relate. I am in the overwhelming minority amongst my friends, but I just don’t get the Kevin Smith aesthetic.

I liked American Beauty though. The plot was vile and the characters were horrible people-but the acting was magnificent and the hyper-suburbia was enjoyable to watch.
However, that plastic bag thing? Puh-leeze!

Considering where I’m at right now…

Eternal Sunshine actually really caught me offguard when I finally saw it two nights ago. It spoke to me so much of how selective our memory gets as a relationship grinds down, how all we can seem to recall is every last little grating detail about someone, until they’re almost all the way out the door, and then we paint all of the old just-starting-out memories in such pristine shades of idealism and we want to hold on all over again. And then of course the final question: if we knew how it would end up when we meet someone new, would we go through with it all anyway?

So, yeah, it’s pretty much tailor-made for me right now; not sure it would have struck me so at any other time in my life. Besides the fact that I was braced to hate Jim Carrey in it but was pleasantly surprised.

    Everyone else liked, I didn’t

    24-Hour Party People
    Self-indulgence times 100; I don’t like punk music anyway.
    The Anniversary Party
Self-indulgence times 100; the angst of rich white people in their thirties.
    Lost in Translation
I can’t articulate why; I’ve tried to, but I just get into a mess
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Some claimed it was a love story, but I thought it didn’t speak well for love
    The English Patient
People having an affair, posing in windows for all to see. The first scene was good (with Naveen Andrews), and then it went downhill.

do you know – i just got home from the video store. guess what i rented? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Farenheit 9/11. the first ‘cos i keep hearing such great reviews, the second ‘cos i’m curious – i’m always curious about Michael Moore. call it an affliction.

oh, & i picked up season one, volume one of Six Feet Under. which means i should be scrapping all week…

    You named 4 great movies.

To me, American Beauty isn’t remotely like them; and living in suburbia, it wasn’t like any suburbia I’ve ever lived in.

I think it was more a rich man’s dark fantasy about suburbia.

Most of it was old news. I thought he did a poor job of making the movie feel like a damning indictment of the Bush Administration, and more like a seething cauldron of personal hatred toward Bush himself. As such, I thought it pretty much negated its stated purpose as a vehicle of truth.

Not denying the facts — denying the impact.

    Shitty movie making.

Also thought the montage of Arabs juxtaposed against Administration officals was borderline race baiting.

I haven’t really heard a good argument against Fahrenheit 9/11 yet.

The only part that ticked me off was showing Iraq as a peaceful place where children fly kites. Everything else seemed pretty straightforward, and I haven’t seen it refuted anywhere.

Disagree on the Star Wars movies (the original trilogy, anyway), wholeheartedly agree on F-9/11. For the latter, I thought we’d be lynched in the theater when, as it finished, my wife made a comment about how godawful and boring it was (to me, but loud enough that the surrounding person or two could hear).

American Beauty… I don’t think Alan Ball had the concept of Everyman here at all. He’s just narrator, protagonist. None of the characters meant to be likable, it’s just a visual medium of telling a story of surburbia.

Not all movies are painted pretty where there’s a good guy. Sometimes there just isn’t one.

Se7en, True Romance, Wall Street, 12 Monkeys and The Usual Suspects are other examples of good films in this style.
