Nice “SPEAK” tonight. Highlights for me (among many) were Dave and Heather’s pair of poems on a painting by Wil Barnet, and Dave I’s second poem.
The whole question about the rapid fire performance delivery that seems to be enforced by slam these days came up several times tonight. Folks who believe they can’t “perform” a piece without being in that mode, so they look for ways to deliver the pieces that way when it’s not the best way to deliver that particular poem. I hate this rigidity.
The older I get, the slower and softer I read, most of the time — can still reach for it if need be, but I find it rarely is needed.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Then I watched about 45 minutes of the debate.
I think they both looked like idiots most of the time. This is the best we can do?
Edge tonight in my eyes went to Kerry on the minimum wage question alone; other than that, total draw based on what I saw.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Gotta figure out plans for the NY trip this weekend — without a car now (Anne’s is in the shop over the weekend for sure) so it’s either the train or the bus.
onward…

ITs taken me too damned long to be able to slow down and let the poems breathe. Perhaps that is what I like about Speak, it forces your to slow down, just by the nature of the set up. I like the pauses. Who is it said that music is the space between the notes? And Borges said that Poetry remembers when once it was song. So putting two theories together, poetry is the space between the words. I think I have given up on slam because I don’t want to talk fast, I want something else from my time on stage. So that’s why the focus on Speak and on Worcester Storytellers.

the pace
that was one of the things that i really liked about d.c. poetry…so many different voices and styles. in the past, its what i think made our teams special.
i’ve got family in canada…last nite’s debate makes me think of making a ‘visit’

If bush wins, and you move to canada, I’m going to send him copies of “In America”, “Where are you From” and a few others of yours-with a nice cover letter detailing how his presidency has cost us one of our better poets.
Every week.
Cause, ya know, I got all this free time…

NY?
You’re in town this weekend? If you’re free at some point, give me a call. We’re having a b-day party for the kids on Saturday afternoon. Otherwise, I’m pretty free.

We did. It’s there. We thought it belonged to the staff, since no one claimed it.
If you need it, I’d stop in sometime if you can — they’re open from 7:30 to 3:30 M-F; or I’ll try to make a stop to get it myself.

slow as molasses
i’ve always had a slower rhythm and as i get older i feel i’m sinking even more thoroughly into myself and therefore willing to take even more time with some poems.
we’ve been discussing similar themes here. trying to get different people to come up to continue to stir up the styles you generally see at a slam. its difficult to do becaue as you say, they don’t feel they can deliver the traditional style. i say, good. bring YOUR style not what you think is required.
