Let there be music…warning: the end is strictly for hardcore guitar geeks

I haven’t discussed my listening/playing lately. So…

Recent listening includes the finally completed “Smile,” the legendary lost album of the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson. I’m not a huge BB/Wilson fan (although I love the trio he did with Rob Wasserman and his daughter Carnie, “The Bells of Madness”) but felt like I owed it a listen.

It’s weird and gorgeous. Damn, I find myself starting to become addicted.

Go borrow it and then buy it, to ensure that you like it. (Or for you modern types, download it from somewhere.)

Right this minute, I’m listening to “Do The Strand” by Roxy Music. I really, really love this band, who are responsible for two of my favorite songs of all time, “More Than This” and “Dance Away The Heartache.” Despite the punk trappings and cynicism, I’m a romantic at heart, I guess.

As for playing…hmm. I’ve been remiss. When I have been playing, it’s been on the 1948-52 Regal Archtop (finally got a brand on it from headstock shape).

Still trying to decide whether to keep it acoustic or install the vintage DeArmond pickup. I’m leaning toward the pickup; I have a Kent floating pickup that I add to it occasionally and I really like the sound.

Next step after that will either be the Martin (probably the mahogany 12-fret slope shoulder slot head D-15 dreadnought) or a Fender Hot Rod DeVille amp.

Sigh…wish I were home writing and playing right now.

Roxy Music is one of those bands that I forget about for a while, until someone like you brings them up, and then I think, Oh, YEAH! Roxy Music! And I’ve wasted so much time not listening to them!

I like the D-15 (the whole 15 series in fact)for the same reason. Had a friend who had a 1940 000-15. Loved that thing.

I like the 12 fret neck and sound, meself. Got a couple of old 12 fret instruments, both from the late 20s — another Regal I use for slide, and my fingerstyle pride and joy: a 1928 pre-Harmony Stella in superb condition.

I wish it was mine. I have a Martin D15 mahogony dreadnought. The more standard version.

I googled the picture to see if what you wrote was what I pictured. I love these old ones.

The reason I chose the mahogony D15 is how it’s reminiscent of the Style 15 guitars of the 1940s.

IF you ever get a chance to see the DVD of Gillian and Rawlings live in concert check it out. He’s a good player.

    Dude

I used to dress, and get my hair done so I’d look just like Bryan Ferry. Other fave songs (in addition to your choices) “Slave To Love”, Stone Woman”, their live cover of Neil young’s “Like A Hurricane” and “My Only Love”

    Roxy Rules!

That’s my baby!!! I have the simpler, rounded headstock, but the rest is spot on. Is that yours?

Adore Django, and only recently got turned onto Rawlings, who I like very much.
