OK…

The new Zero Point Zero is up.

One guess what it’s about.

But I surprised myself; I think I did something far better than the polemic I would have expected me to write.

Who woulda thunk it, right?

Dig in, go read it, comment there, here, repost it, trash it…rock out with your bad selves.

    definitely…

And if PSI isn’t willing to do it – which, based on it’s track record, I don’t see happening – it should be done in conjunction with whichever teams/poets are considering pulling out as a boycott.

    From one Dawn to another

I love this idea. I haven’t posted much on the listserve because…well….because. I am already not going to Nationals and the CC crap is just icing on the cake.

What would we have to do to get this idea started? Write a press release? Get the PSI community to finally take a stand on something? How many people do we need to get involved to get this off the ground?

I’m willing to fight and do whatever I need to to help this work. Well short of going to St. Lick my ass, since I can’t stand anything these people have done this year for NPS. Anyway. Let’s chat.

    Not for Nothing, but,

Tony, I think Worcester is a great place to have an extremely hastily thrown together poetry festival the first two weeks of August. Or perhaps there is a city within a day’s drive of St. Louis that would be willing to do such a thing, since people probably already have plane tickets?

I don’t know, I’m not involved, I’m just sayin’. A bus pulling up to the main venue, and filling up with poets on their way to a different city would be quite a statement.

I like this idea a lot. And I think it would have a bigger payoff in the long run, while the CCC thing might pay off better in the short term. I’m speaking as someone on the outside of most slam comm, though. If we run ads on radio–specifically CCC radio, which in Austin is mostly loud commercial tripe that I personally find little regard for–then “our message” becomes part of the cutlureal noise, as you say, on par with discount tires and whatnot. But, if we actively reject the proposition with targetted media responses, we have a chance to make a statement.

Personally, I have far less trouble with RJR than I do with CCC. I think of ClearChannel as the WalMart of the airwaves. I am lucky in that we have a small group of stations that fight them off where possible. It might be interesting to find those stations–those non-CC stations–in your area and let them know that we are protesting (if we are) that deal and why. Perhaps they would be more interested in giving actually free publicity.

Search for CCC stations in your area by entering your city in their search box.

My line of thinking goes like this:
It’s great that we have a committee working on ways to preserve our
ideals as we pursue sponsorship, but how can the current problem be
solved in a way that we, as a community, can maintain our values and
not lose out on the valuable publicity?

This is my very vague, uninformed idea. I’m not a publicity maven, so
it’s quite likely to be flawed. What if we overwhelmingly demand that
St Louis cut out Clear Channel, then send a targeted press release to
sympathetic media outlets — Salon.com, The Howard Stern Show, Mother
Jones, etc. — explaining that we, as poets, cannot accept money from
a corporation that actively censors free speech, and has engaged in a
number of other egregious activities. In the press release, we make
it obvious that we have rejected a six-figure deal because the
    company’s policies are so odious.

Is it possible that the press coming out of that kind of thing would
be approaching, equal to, or greater than the publicity we would get
if we were complicit? And wouldn’t that press be more targeted &
interesting, rather than a loud 10 second blast of whatever sandwiched between an ad for discount tires and the latest Justin Timberlake single?

    Just a thought.
