so, the thing is

I’m really interested in this meme.

I always find them interesting as phenomena, in general; some are dumber than others, of course. But this one — you know, I’m vainly interested in what people who do and do not know me will ask.

So here goes…

“This is the problem with LJ, we all think we are so close, and we know nothing about each other. I’m going to rectify it. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don’t know about you.”

Let the healing begin. (I think I heard that in a movie someplace.)

    Re: sorry, all poetry questions

    I’ll keep that in mind.
I am not sure how I fit in. Because yes I was writing and reading poetry before I heard of Slam, but it DID exist then.
My original aspirations were to be a “Spoken Word” artist, which basically is what slam is without competition. However, finding that my poetry was more chathartic for me, but not really tapping the vein of society I found myself content to just write and read poetry. Then I met Rich and started going to his reading. Next thing you know I was TRYING to slam, but I found I was doing it because I wanted the venue to succeed (and Rich) in making Nationals. But I loathed the competition aspect.

Well, you know, the thing is, I was performing before I ever heard of slam. Before slam existed, in fact…so slam never had the emotional resonance for me anyway. I see my slam time as an important section of my development… but that’s all. It wasn’t central, ever, to my work.

    Merely an oversight.

I’d love, someday, to fund an artists’ collaborative — a building/compound where my buddies and likeminded souls could gather and rest from the travails of the world. Hang out, write, paint, etc. That would be great.

Hmmm. Maybe if I tried performing (seeing as my thing has always been just to read poetry, slam was never very important to me) I’d feel rekindled. Do a reversal…a variation if you will on your curative approach.
    Thanks Tony!

    Re: sorry, all poetry questions

    I see.

Well, I still find transcendent moments, Amy; for instance, I felt like I hit something in Newark last week during “Cante Jondo” and “DIY” that was a rush, a connection to the audience, which is really what it’s all been about for me. When my energy starts to fail me, as it has so often lately, hearing a great piece can pick me up no end.
And I’ve been doing lots of reading lately, so that helps.

Yeah, I know you don’t slam. I guess the question was to get a picture of the before when slam was still exciting to you and now if that feeling of excitement has transferred over to some other form of performance..or aat least anything associated with poetry. I guess I am asking because I find myself feeling withdrawn from poetry lately no matter how I struggle to stay enchanted with it.

    Re: sorry, all poetry questions

    Good questions.

I think the single most definitive poetry moment was in 1999 at the Nationals, when I did “Radioactive Artist” in the second bout against Green Mill and Champaign-Urbana. It was a tribute to a young girl who had died that day, the daughter of a friend of mine…It scored poorly, despite a really good performance. I didn’t care.

Who inspires me? What inspires me? Tough one. I think I see myself in the company of Neruda and such. Not as an equal of course, but as a striver for similar goals. Rilke and Neruda probably give me the greatest incentives to do more, do better, reach higher (cue New Agey music here).

I get at least one rush from poetry every time I’m at a reading. Usually by listening, more rarely from performing. I don’t slam anymore.

    That’s a good one.

Got my first knife when I was six, from my dad. Over the years, I got into buying one periodically, just for fun…

In my mid teens, I began carrying a knife all the time, for a variety of reasons. ( More than that, I don’t think I’d like to say.)

Over the years, I’ve owned everything from martial arts blades to switchblades to serious, military issue tactical fighting knives. Now I tend to focus on higher end antiques and used weapons.

Probably have a couple hundred right now.

Re: Seriously, when do you think you might come to Texas

I don’t know, but probably not this year…still planning a 20th anniversary trip somewhere in the fall.

    It’s on the agenda, though.

Why do you think that Americans still treat mental illness like a plague and why is it such a taboo topic? If you could have any super hero power, what would it be? What do you love/hate about writing and slam poetry in general? 🙂
