Hello…

Remember me?

Been crazy busy with three days’ worth of classes I’ve been teaching…so today is catch up.

Two things:

1. SPEAK on Wednesday was great. A small turnout but some of the best poetry I’ve heard there, all on the theme of “perspective” — and mad profusion of great covers, too. Thanks to all…more on this later.

2. The new Zero Point Zero column is up — an odd one on one of the spiritual dimensions of being a poet. Love to hear your thoughts — and if you want to comment there, help stimulate some action on the site, that’d be ok too.

    Re: All true.

yes, absolutely – the craft part, the puzzle part, is very important! for me, it’s also a really satisfying part of the howle thing – the part where i get to dig in & sort of live in that space of the poem for as long as it takes. i just don’t think that a lot of people would be driven to it if not for the discourse part…

…come to think of it, some people aren’t really driven to it with the discourse part…

plainly brattily spoken, i think that dialogue is a gateway drug – it can lead to craft.

good God, i shouldn’t be let loose in public today.

I do think, though, that the “puzzle-piece” part of the equation is important. It’s one of the main things that drives me, for instance; the whole idea of deciphering the lock on the poem, and getting in…

Just voice isn’t enough, for me. Craft is also crucial; it’s just that craft that isn’t subservient to voice leads to pretty pictures that don’t mean much.

See, I think a lot of us start doing this not in the name of art, but in the name of hydraulics.

is quite possibly my favorite line of the year. very very true, too. there is stuff i write that’s in the just-for-me realm, but it’s more of a processing kind of writing. it also has a tendency to get thrown out in the evntuality. unless it has some really good lines, natch 😉

i do maintain that po8ry has more to do with discourse than the pure puzzle of putting the poem together. have ya ever noticed how many people who write are the same people who will tell you (on or off stage) about being fringe or disenfranchised? being in a forum where one can speak their piece, uninterrupted, and after the luxury of time to polish up their statement, is awfully appealing to the misfit inside.
