Was there ever even a question?

The Sex Pistols
Old school punk! You just say what you have to say
regardless of what everyone else thinks!
You’re one of my most favourite types of
music… You’re raw and uncut! You’re
surrounded by hype…just don’t let it make you
go insane…

What genre of rock are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

But you know, there’s an important point raised by realsupergirl, which is that the choices offered did not include any bands fronted primarily or exclusively by women — no L7, no Sleater-Kinney, no Julie Ruin, no My Ruin, no Bratmobile.

I think it’s a legitimate point — I know that there are lots of people who listen to grrl bands almost exclusively. Certainly, that’s as much a “genre” as some of these other “genres”.

I know, I know — it’s just a fun thing, an online quiz I shouldn’t take so seriously.

Tough. She makes a good point.

    mmmmmmmm, Caaaaaat Poooowerrrr –

Cross Bones Style (& then shortly thereafter, the whole album & the next one) was my own personal obsession November of the year before last.

(& just in case you’re wondering -she throws one of ther weirdest ever live shows – she just keeps playing (not always coherently) until someone backstage tells her it’s time to stop. three hours later, we all felt we’d gotten our ticket price’s worth.)

If at all possible, I’d like to teach the whole world to sing “Cross Bones Style” by Cat Power. I FREAKIN’ dig that band.

For the record, I am proud to say as a 44 year old man that I’ve got a crush on Carrie Brownstein.

    Even more than Corin Tucker.

By the way, Punk Planet JUST started coming a week ago…THANK YOU!!!!

oh, God, Tony – yes. & it fosters the sickest form of self-criticism on a regular basis.

i quit watching VH-1 when they started harping on how hard it was to camera-savvy Missy Elliot up (before she decided to become the spokesperson for some kinda radical dieting bullshit). i get nauseaus every time someone says “what a shame” it is that Janis was, “so ugly!” despite having, “such a powerful voice!” (not that it harmed her sales or attendence, but fuuuk who wants to be publicly called ugly over & over just ‘cos you don’t look like Sinatra’s underage girlfriends?!). i’m annoyed as fuck that Corrin Tucker isn’t a sex symbol yet, & i hate that someone has had the gaul to infer to me over the last year (guilded in comaradely “sarcastic” giggles) that i should lose some weight now so’s to look attractive to labels & later, when DMouse is famous i can, “let [my]self go” – that’s how the music biz worx. there was too much of a grain of truth in it.

but the middle-America that eats up Cheryl Crow & alla that perfect round-but-not-too-round apparently can’t get that Chan Marshall kookiness. & it’s like people take it personally that Kerri Brownstein photographs poorly – Big Circulation Media doesn’t want pimples or chunky thighs on their girls – they want something teenage boys can scotch tape up to the wall & fantasize about; Big Circulation Media counts on the Fantasy – they know everyone sees regular girls every day, right?

    right?

thank God for the Rest of the Press, for good ol’ reliable Indie, for, for Punk Planet & Paste & the Bitch List. thank God for InRadio. thank God for word of mouth & proof of goodness in the pudding.

    all of it.
i know where my music dollars go.

but, fuk, Quiz Maker, if you’re gonna conjure the Sex Pistols, why didn’t Blondie, X-Ray Spex, Sleater-Kinney, or even Pat-fucken-Benetar cross yer mind?

    hell.

    Heh.

The quiz returns the favor, I’m sure. ;-D

Don’t you feel in general that “Grrl bands” get short shrift in the larger scheme of things if they aren’t “pretty” in some way — big dollars and honors to Sheryl Crow, for instance, while Cat Power and PJ Harvey remain underknown “critic’s darlings?”

the choices offered did not include any bands fronted primarily or exclusively by women — no L7, no Sleater-Kinney, no Julie Ruin, no My Ruin, no Bratmobile.

meh. i stick my tongue out at the quiz.
