I just posted a comment to the slam list suggesting that Maya Angelou isn’t a great poet.
I am taking bets on how long it will be before I am called a “hater”.

Re: From SNL: Tracy Morgan as Maya Angelou
Holy mother sea of milk! I missed this one completely. Hysterical.

From SNL: Tracy Morgan as Maya Angelou
Toucan Sam, you leap on the back of the wind,
load stone to assorted fruit flavors,
Phoenix of the dawns, one smile.
We gave you, Toucan Sam, life.
You, Toucan Sam, give us loops of fruit.
Fruity loops, Fruit Loopies, swimming
in the churning, frothy mother sea of milk,
Kellogg’s appreciates consumer comments,
P. O. Box 221, Battle Creek, Michigan,
a prism of fruity color,
a cornocopia of over forty fruity tastes.
The orange, the apple, the grape,
the pomegrante, the quince, the kumkwat,
the kiwi, the planitain, the guava…

Re: But she’s not a great poet…
Oh, and by the way…this was a totally cynical post, Andrew. I have no intention of backing down…Regular slamlist devotees here in LJ land know that I’m referring to the inevitable piling on that happens on the list whenever a sacred cow is attacked, however gently.

The comment itself,
honestly, wasn’t worth a repost here. I simply said, in relation to a discussion of poets becoming household names, that I didn’t think being a household name is necessarily indicative of talent, and I used Maya as an example.
The link to the smashing Wanda Coleman article (thanks, Dawn!) is:

Re: But she’s not a great poet…
Actually, I was being charitable. I think she’s Godawful.
So far, no one’s chimed in one way or the other, except for Dawn, who posted the link to the Wanda Coleman article.

Stumbled Through
I think the most important thing to note about M.A. is how god awful she is at reciting her *own* poetry. Ye gods, it’s almost less painless to listen to dubya.

Tony, can you repost it here, please?

Ask Wanda Coleman what *she* thinks… I posted a link to that in the slam list.

she must be great. afterall, she has her own line of hallmark cards. nothing says top flight poetry like, “just thinking of you gives me tingles, sorry to hear about your shingles.”

But she’s not a great poet…
But Tony…
She’s not a great poet. I mean, she’s good, but she’s not fantastic.
Stick to your guns.

I’d bet that someone has already given that reply.
