To Be A Sunflower

Make up a word to describe
a sunflower’s turning toward the sun —
you’ll have to stand between flower and sun
with the sun at your back to do so.

You’ll tell me, then, that you can stand
to one side to watch, and that’s true:
but how will you know what it feels like
to be a sunflower if you do?

I write of ecstasy and oneness at night, of pain and separation during the day. I try to write at twilight whenever I can; that’s the place where truth shows up most clearly, when I choose to see it.

Depression: the natural result of an overarching obsession with symbolism.

If you lose your soul in pursuit of an Ideal, you may as well give up.

Manifesto

Every breath complete
within itself. Every word set
alone and in concert at once. Every
attempt intended, every accident
considered, every slip of the tongue
revered as oracle until truth itself changes.

Every line the only line
until the next one arrives.

If you’re a good poet, you are precise.

PRECISE, motherfucker.

PRECISE. Not vague. Not mushy. Not ready to overlook stupid ass mistakes and ignorance in a poem in favor of the sincerity of emotion contained therein.

PRECISE. Every word’s there for a reason. Every word adds something. You know why the word is there if someone asks you about it.

PRECISE. Minimal abstraction; more images; more concrete sensory description. NO FUCKING SLOGANS.

I’ll go back to grouching in seclusion now.
