Party Favor

He announces that
he can stick a knife
in an eye
from across the room

and thus disturbs
the party’s universe
of care and laughter
three times:

first when all realize
he means it; second when
all realize he
has, somehow, probably

practiced; third,
when all realize that
someone known to all,
someone allowed in this universe,

is the type of man
who not only thinks of knives,
throwing, and eyes in one sequence —
after all, they all do that —

but who has taken the pains
to ensure that the thought
is no longer secret, but, in fact,
potentially actionable.

Tony, I clicked over to your blog from GP, and have spent the better part of my morning reading and thoroughly enjoying. I really loved this piece, and how it put me on edge. Like the previous comment and the people at the party, I was totally unsure how to feel about this moment!

    Kyle.

I am not sure what the official tone of this was supposed to be….but I found it really funny until the very end when I realized actually this event could have been a bit disturbing…though truth be know I still couldn’t quite remove the smile on my face. The wording and phrasing are brilliantly written…I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
