Finch

A man
believes he controls
the size of the world
with his voice

Like any common finch
he strings his fence loud
and stretches it until
he’s sure it will contain
all he sees
forever

Like any common finch
he will die young
and another finch will claim
his trees

No one listening
will notice he
in particular
has gone

The yard is always
full of finches
and it’s often hard
to tell one common finch
from another
