Sneakers on Wires

he changes
her radio from news
to classic rock.

screw politics, he says,
getting out to toss
the old sneakers up and over the wire.

she smoothes her hair
and straightens herself
in the seat.

his new nikes
smell just like the inside
of her father’s gun cabinet.

she understands something
she did not even know about
before she got in the car.
