I believe in this, it’s been tested by research…

The fact that we came in second to Rhode Island is the only semi-surprise. And New Jersey taking third is no surprise at all.

There’s a reason they call us Massholes.

    Amen on the beautification sister!

Too bad they don’t actually enforce that law about cell phones.

    Re: erm….THESE people??

I live in NoVa, commute to Bowie, MD, driving a hundred miles a day roundtrip, I have seen every type of driver.
No, not everyone is bad, but enough are bad to make me roll my eyes almost daily.

I also have a 16 year old, so I am familiar with NoVa DL requirements.

No system can be perfect, and I agree that syncronized requirements would really help here.

But in the end, people around here a tleast, need to hang up the cell, put down whatever they are reading at 50+ mph, and beautify at home or at their destination.

    erm….THESE people??

Not all DC drivers are that terrible.

The problem w/ DC is they are a low-expectation having city. We get a pamphlet w/ about 150 multiple choice questions that have the answers on the back as a study guide before we get our permits. People basically “study” aka memorize the stupid list and if they’re smart they’ll actually memorize the questions to go with the multiple choices. We take the written to get the permit and the written consists of about half of those 150 or so questions randomly drawn on a computer.

Then you go on a road test a few weeks later and voila! You have a license.

At least w/ MD (who tied w/ us…which is hilarious because they are indeed WORSE than we are), you get a book (that NO ONE REALLY READS … except to pass the written – therefore no actual absorption), take the written, get your permit and I think you get your road test given to you on an obstacle course versus putting you on the road.

    But either way…the testing sucks.

The other thing is, there really should be a global standard w/ driving. The fact that each state has its own rules and requirements makes for bad drivers.

Example: In MD, you can park opposite side of the street. So let’s say you live on a one way…you can park your car going in the opposite direction. I don’t know of any place where you can legally do that. And it makes for confusion when you’re driving what you think is the right direction only to spot cars going in the wrong direction.

Example #2: In MD (Baltimore specifically), you can turn left on a one-way even on the red. What kind of shit is that? I know of nowhere else that you can do that. We can’t do that in DC so I wouldn’t do it in another state.

Example #3: In the DC Metro area, it used to be that at 15 3/4 you get your permit so at 16 you can get your license. Now you have to have served x number of hours in driving/learning time before you can procure your actual license. Makes for a more “responsible” driver if they have those hours put in already. Drawback: They don’t enforce that for new drivers over the age of 18 (if memory serves correctly).

If we make the driving law more uniform from state to state, then maybe we can stop of the confusion that causes stupid drivers.

This study is flawed. Because just last night, at least three people nearly knocked me off my bike trying to ask me directions from the car. The ones I remember were from Mississippi, Arkansas, and North Carolina.

    Damn Crackers.

and I thought florida would be lower.

I’ve lived in Rhode Island, and yes, they can be nucking futs.

I think the left-turn green light would be a revelation in MA and RI. Imagine a left-turn arrow at EVERY intersection. It turns the extreme sport of driving into a mere passtime.

    Love it.

When I took the 20-question test to get a learner’s permit in ’99, the questions were so pathetic. I really hope the test they used in this study was better than:

“When is it appropriate to throw a lit cigarette from your car window?”

I shit you not, one of the multiple choice answers was:

“c. When the road is edged with dry grass or brush.”

So Massachusetts’ driving laws comprehension is held to pretty low standards, I’m not shocked at all that we’re #50.

    *sigh*. Oh, Rhode Island…

I’m just surprised the DC metro area was higher on the list. These people are absolutely terrible drivers.
