Struck me a few minutes ago.
I’ve been talking for a while about wanting PSI to fund a prize for good writing.
I just realized that I should just do it myself. Plunk down 500 bucks and get a couple of judges to read poems.
Get a structure and a process to get poems mailed to me that were used in competition at the NPS. Have house managers sign off on them or something.
Award one serious prize of 500 bucks to the best poem submitted.
Do it piggybacked onto the PSI structure without going through the PSI process. Control the whole thing myself.
And call it “The Ken Hunt Prize,” given each year for exemplary writing within the slam community.
The last conversation I ever had with Ken involved the disappointment both of us were feeling with slam. The last book he ever gave me of his was signed, “Thanks for helping me keep my faith in poetry alive.”
I think I have my marching orders.

>>>I am aware slam poets tend to be online, so if you missed this call, I don’t know how.
I avoid the listserves for my sanity and don’t know Delrica personally, so that’s probably how. Like I said, the comment wasn’t meant to be smart-ass- I genuinely didn’t know that such a publication did or might soon exist.

The only stipulation for a poem to be considered for the anthology is that it be something that was performed during the course of an NPS: any day event, any bout, any hotel room cipher…period.

PSI HAD a newsletter. It has a new committee of re-committed, all-new faces to make it happen again.
A report will be given by the new lead on this project – Delrica – at tghe SlamMaster’s meeting next month.
At the same time, she has not been shy about asking for material/articles/thoughts/help on the new newsletter in every quarter I am aware slam poets tend to be online, so if you missed this call, I don’t know how.

Speaking as someone who has worked on TWO of PSI’s anthologies and founded the first, some info:
1) I think a prize like this is a good idea, PSI-related or not. I didn’t know Ken – missed him by a couple of years, I think – but if it has member support, I see no reason why it couldn’t be investigated.
2) Attaching such a thing (once official) to the existing anthology weeding process is as simple as adding you to the editorial loop and letting you get the poems as the editors do. This year I put all submissions into one HUGE Word document and the editors got to pick through it all, score it and send the scores back.
3) Poems are typically collected from August to early September, then mulled over for a month or so by the three editors. The anthology inclusions are usually – USUALLY – ready for release by the end of September. You could make your decision and/or announcement at that time.
4) Getting the anthology out this year has been a real chore, but it’s not typical. Steve and myself have both had exacerbated work schedules. We expect to have this ready by SlamMasters. EXPECT TO.
Any other questions or concerns, feel free to hit me up via email.

I think if the idea is to encourage a better writing in slammers-community, it might be good to stipulate that the poems submitted must be actually performed, maybe even slammed, at the ____ (fill in the blank, NPS?).

Fuckin’ A!
(I can say that now that I live in NY again). Genius, buddy. Love. It. The anthology comments are interesting — take them for what they are — but make it YOURS. I created my own job with PSI to make part of it a better place — I think that’s a GORGEOUS idea, and CERTAINLY a fitting tribute to Ken.
You fucking Rock.

Yes, but if you keep it seperate from the Anthology, you are not only culling from the poets at NPS, or poets whom got to perform a poem at some time during NPS–so, then you can maybe get people who are not members.
I know the rules for the anthology change every year, or at least seem to, but if the consenus is that the quality of work at NPS has gone down hill, but the tule for the anhtology is that only poems performed there can be submitted, then a contest from the anthology wouldn’t seem to accomplish Tom’s Goal. . .

Poets have to join PSI to compete at NPS, so that possible enticement isn’t there.
I actually sort of like the idea of keeping it independent, but the anthology does give an additional exposure, and since the winning poet’s probably going to make the anthology anyway …

Or, keep it seperate from the anthology, and require poets to join PSI to enter the contest, though I know many will already be members it would still be a way to drive up membership numbers throug maybe announcements in P & W, and then maybe have a small showcase at NPS of the top 5 poets in conjunction with winners of other local contests, like Chicago Guild Complex Has an award won by Lucy Anderton and many other talented writers. Maybe writers who have won scholarships/residencies/ grants.
That way you would never have to rely on the existence or quality of the anthology for your contest, and possibly more easily bridge the gap between the academic of the slam community who have moved on, and the newer people who seem to care more abot performance than original content.
The membership cost could be included in the entry fee, too keep it low, maybe you could negotiate a special 6 month price with PSI–the enticement that if PSI sends them newsletters they would perhaps join up again, and perhaps go to their local slams.

I totally agree with this idea, except I think it needs a swim-suit portion of the competition.

Don’t know if the following idea qualifies more as piggypacking or going through process, but:
Why not do it in conjuction with the NPS anthology project? That way, the poem collecting/sorting process is already taken care of. The award benefactor just sets down the guidelines for this specfic honor so that the editors (or other selected judges) can pick the most-suited poem. This way, the poet gets even more recognition, if the piece is billed as the prize winner in the anthology.
Of course, the anthology production and publication schedule doesn’t seem too stable, but that wouldn’t necessarily take away from the honor- the winner could be announced at any time.
