I don’t know what it means to me
to go and see the peace monks
and on the same day visit the site of Gettysburg
to go and stand and watch them go by
(their faithful dog with them)
walking and not marching
then to go to a place named for a general of one war
to another war site where once were
the bloodiest of bloody things
to sit there and rest uncommonly quiet
as the peace monks went by
their faithful dog with them
but it all must mean something
not the least of which involved
thinking of the angel lights
which shone above the wounds
of the soldiers awaiting care
the soldiers who did not die
but went home in the light
from the terrific battle
to await the presence arriving
the presence of peace
walking to them
and telling them to rest
with their faithful dog beside them
I can’t tell what it means
but it means something
