Glassy

Careless — I am careless
toward the present. I prefer
the past and its knowable quirks.
I prefer the future and its quirky
unmapped uncertainty. What will
happen versus what did happen?
Meanwhile, things happen.
I’m powerless to change them
so I don’t bother trying.

Sitting here watching the river flow, like
the song says; it will take time and lapping water —
sometimes peacefule, occasionally violent,
usually in between somewhere. Despair
seems unnecessary. So does ecstasy.
Instead, I sit here and watch. The glassy surface
tells me how to wait, where to stand.
