Last Need: For Smooth

It’s easy to look back
and say life was rough,
and everything that happened
was like being dragged over
sandpaper.

If I could
do it again,
I’d like to dive down
under the grit
and get to the backside
that’s always smooth.

Smooth —
that would have been
good enough.

Don’t tell me
it was better this way —
I’d gladly have settled
for less.
