Finding Religion

we cobble
faith
together

from the odd street-Christian tract
comic books
snatches of poems
random lines from TV

slip it into our thin wallets
as if
it could feed us

and starve while we imagine ourselves
well-fed

I read several of yours tonight and this is my favorite. I’m thinking of a line something about “you can’t buy a pound of faith and take it home in a paper sack.” I don’t know if I heard that in church, but it makes sense. That’s what I thought of when I read your poem: faith is a gift.

      Thanks.

I’m always intrigued by how people cobble their comfort together these days…and by how little actual comfort some of them find in it.

I think you are right. Most folks are starving.
Something for your wallet : )

    one definition of religion:

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble ,and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
    James 1:27 NKJV
